Introduction of an I/O Psych major

Howdy,

My name is Charley Lewis. I am an easy going guy that is just about always happy. My favorite thing to do is hang out with my friends. We usually play super smash bros or cards against humanity, whenever we get together. I played smash bros. all throughout the summer and I ended up being top fifty in the state when left back for school. I also have a group that I play D&D with and I always have a great time doing that. I enjoy playing video games and watching anime. I guess I am just your general all around nerd.

I am a psych major and am a super senior at this point. I started out as a chemical engineer, but I decided along the way that that really was not the right path for me. I love people. I am very much extroverted and am happiest when I'm around others. I decided that engineering would not be a good fit due to this, for I would be forced to work a lot by myself and wouldn't get the human interaction that I need. I took a psych class in high school and have been in love with psychology ever since. It took me too long to realize that I wanted to study psychology and do something with it, but I eventually figured it out. I took my sweet time in coming to that conclusion though, thus the super senior status. I am still glad that I made the switch, I love all of my classes and everything just feels right. I even managed to get straight As last semester. I was also in a research lab all last year for psychology, and it has been very enjoyable. I learned a lot from it and had a lot of fun doing it. I am really hoping to go to grad school for industrial organizational psychology, and this lab will be a huge help in aiding my endeavors.

  1. Hey Charley!
I also love playing Smash Bros. It's cool that you're a Lucas main, I really like using Link in Smash 4 and Snake in Brawl. My little brother is way better than I am though. That's really neat that you're a Psych major! I keep wanting to take the intro class as an elective because it's such an interesting subject to me. Good luck on your grad school path!

  2. Hey Charley!
I also am a psychology major, and have loved psychology ever since taking my high school required credit. That is so cool that you have been in a research group for so long; I am just curious, but what research group is it? I am currently in two research groups and have absolutely loved the experience and how helpful all of the grad students have been throughout the whole process.

  3. Hi, Charley!

I am an extrovert too, and am also happiest around people. I love to hear that there are other people out there like me! I am a psychology minor, and agree with you that it is a very interesting subject. I love that you are having so much fun with school, I think that is something very difficult to find. Great to meet you!

  4. Hey there Charley! You have a lot in common with my boyfriend, as he is a fan of watching anime and playing video games as well. We played Super Smash Bros. all summer long as well, and as much as he hates it, I am much better than my boyfriend! My main of choice is Sheik and my boyfriend's is Link. I'm glad you found a major that makes you happy and wish you the best!

  5. Hey Charley! I am really happy that you found a major that makes you happy! It is so hard not working with people. It is worth an extra year/semester of school for more happiness in the long run! Nice to meet you! Have a great semester!

  6. Charley!
My man! I am a huge fan of super smash, although I usually never play with Lucas. My go to player would have to be Kirby. I am also glad you have found your calling with psychology. Many of my friends are in that program and they seem to like it a lot. Good luck with it man!

  7. I am so glad you reminded about the D&D, Charley... this weekend at Twitter someone shared the coolest thing, a bunch of D&D-related and other kinds of auto-generators; I remembered I wanted to share this with you, and I almost forgot... here it is: 5e Random Dungeon Generator (plus all kinds of other generators you can see down the side there)... I need to write up a blog post about this or something because it could be useful for all kinds of storytelling inspiration! And that is so cool that you are looking at i/o psychology; I sometimes come across articles from that field because I am interested in feedback. A lot of what I've learned about school-based feedback is from people doing research in the workplace. So, if in your psychology reading and research you come across anything having to do with feedback and motivation, let me know, and then I can share it out with the class too! :-)

  8. Hey there, Charley! It’s nice to meet you! I also like to play video games with my friends—right now I’ve been helping my roommate get the hang of Skyrim. I also like playing D&D with my friends in the OU Tabletop Club, we usually have our meetings on Saturday if you’d like to join. Anyhow, I’m looking forward to reading your stories in Mythology and Folklore!

  9. Hi Charley! It’s nice to meet you! It is really awesome that you have found a major that you really love. I think that is the best way to make our education as college students worth while. It’s also cool that you have a group of people to play D&D with! I don’t know much about this game, but it looks really fun. Best of luck to you in the rest of this semester.

  10. Hello Charley, you seem to be a pretty cool guy. I also like hanging out with friends though we mainly play computer games! I also changed my major a couple times resulting in me being a super senior. I am glad however you found what you actually want to do. It takes experiencing different things to really get a bearing on what we really want. Good luck on grad school! I hope everything works out for you!

  11. Hello Charley! I hope your semester is going well!! That is so cool that you played Smash Brothers and was outstanding at it! It is a really fun game but I am not very good at it at all. I am glad to hear that you found the right major for you. I did the same thing last year and I found that making the switch is hard but is so worth it. Good luck the rest of the semester!!

  12. Hi Charley,

I also like playing super smash brothers with my friends. I haven't gotten around to buying it for my switch yet, but I probably will soon because it's so fun. Also, congratulations on finding a major that you enjoy! I'm glad you were able to pursue something that will fit your needs in the career field. Good luck this semester!

  13. Hi Charley!

I'm also happiest when I'm around other people! I don't know if you've ever taken the love language test, but "quality time" is number one for me. But I'm also introverted, so I need my alone time from time to time so I don't feel overwhelmed. That's awesome how your happiness of being around inspired your career path choice. I'm sure any career that involves psychology involves lots of human interaction. Good luck with all your endeavors!

  14. Hey Charley! Thanks for sharing! I think it’s awesome that you got to work in a research lab. A few of my friends have gotten to do that and they have told me how much they’ve learned from it. I am also glad that you found a major that you love, even if it happened later! I can’t wait to read more of your posts.

  15. Hi Charley!
My brothers all make fun of me for being very under achieved at any electronic type of game. I'm sure Super Smash Bros is something you can bond over with your closest friends. For college students, I feel like sometimes one is expected to be bound to a career path after sophomore or junior year. That is amazing you not only found your passion, but also continued to pursue it.
Can't wait to read your work!

  16. Hi Charley, it's nice to meet you!

I've played Smash Bros with my actual bro before, but my main strategy is generally to pick Kirby and then button mash, so definitely not going to be challenging your ranking (lol). My husband and I are trying DnD for the first time this semester, and I'm really enjoying it so far! I'm glad you were able to do research in your field, too - that's such a great experience.

  17. Hey Charley!
I am also a psych major so props for that! When I came into college I was pre-med but made the switch to psych extremely quick. So quickly that I am able to graduate on time haha. No worries though, I am sure your extra time in college has been worth it and will help you in your future endeavors. I really like the look and layout of your blog is very chill and from your introduction I get a very chill vibe you as well.

  18. Hey Charley! We're pretty similar with our choices for our majors. I'm also a psych major but started college out with something different. I was pre-med, then went to pre-PA and eventually ended up with just psychology because I realized how interesting it is and I could see myself actually doing something in that field. I hope you get into a good grad school for IO!

  19. Hi Charley! I considered I/O Psychology myself for a while before settling on Professional Writing. I admire the strength you have for realizing that your major wasn't working and taking the brave step to change it. It isn't easy changing your course when you've started. I'd like to get more into D&D but it always seems so complicated. I love creating stories and characters though! Good luck with your major and I hope you have a great winter break!

  20. Hi Charley! I took one psych class in college and decided it wasn't for me but maybe that was because I took the wrong class. I took Intro to Personality, and I didn't appreciate how all the old white guys were getting it all/most of it wrong! Industrial organizational psychology sounds interesting and it seems like you'll definitely connect with a lot of people through it! Good luck on the rest of the semester!
