Week 2 story: A Guiding Spirit

Image
A Guiding Spirit Link This story can now be view in my portfolio here . There was once a native American man who was tasked to go out and find food for his tribe. The tribe had recently fallen upon hard times and supplies were running scarce. Atop that, the man belongs to a small tribe and was one of few that able enough to venture out and find food for his fellow tribesmen. He made his preparations before setting out. He gathered tools to help ensure his survival. He readied his weapons for the prey that he was hoping to happen upon. Lastly, before he set out, he began to gather some basic rations for the journey ahead, but soon made the decision that he best leave it all for the tribe.   He set out in the forest, and it was not long until he was overtaken by hunger. The man scavenged as best he could, yet he was spending much greater amounts of energy then he was gaining. Nearing the end of the third day, the man hadn’t seen so much as the tracks of an ...

reading notes: week 2 anthology

I read the story of The Indian Who Wrestled with a Ghost . It was about an Indian who was keeping watch. He would set up his camp near the forest and it sounded like he happened to be sleeping near a burial ground. While he was there, a women came up to him and checked to make sure he was asleep. He was being very vigilante and watching her carefully to insure that she did not do anything to harm him. When she revealed a blade though he immediately jumped to his feat and scared her off.  a few nights later a different ghost approached him and promised that he would be successful at his mission if he could win a wrestling match against the ghost. After taking some smart preparations before the match, he was able to win due to that forethought. He was then successful on his mission. The story end by saying "It came out just as the ghost said. That is why people believe what ghosts say". Something about that line really stuck out to me. It really makes me think about a lot of di...

time strategies

Image
Using Checklists Link It is really important to have time management strategies. I am a super senior, and I really only started using time management strategies a couple of years ago. I am still not great with time management, but I know a lot of the tricks and have been consistently getting my work done on time. Making lists of the things that need to get done can be extremely helpful. I had a lot on my plate last year, so I would make lists of what I had to do and when things needed to be done by. It turned the mountain back into a mole hill, which made me feel a lot less overwhelmed. It was also a great feeling as I accomplished things and got to remove them from the list, I could actually see the progress that I was making. I read the psychology of checklists and 4 questions to help you overcome procrastination . These two articles had a lot of useful information, but I was already aware of most of it. My favorite thing that the psychology of checklists talked about...

Technology

Image
I am really bad when it comes to technology. I can work my game system and I can do the most basic of things on my phone and computer. Beyond that, it takes a little effort for me to do anything else dealing with technology, mostly just trial and error until I've hit the right button, or the wrong button too many times. I am having a decent time using the blogger, but I am still just slowly learning the basics, repetition is helpful. I am not totally inept, so I do not have any worries about all of the tools we will be using, I am just aware that it will by no means come naturally to me. My technology skills Link

Class Assignments

Image
I am enjoying how the class is looking thus far. The work load seems reasonable to me, nothing to crazy as long as we ensure to keep up with it and don't let it overtake us. The course feels like it has a lot of autonomy, freedom to choose the way in which you do things. I really like that, because autonomy is one of the key factors of intinsicly motivating people. I am also loving the extra credit and how many options there are to choose from. I can do whichever one I am in the mood for, or I may find a favorite and just stick with that one. Regardless, it makes the workload seem easier and provides a little extra motivation to get the work for this class done. The only thing that I do not quite understand is the final project. I have no clue how or where to begin, but I'm hoping that will all be cleared up in the weeks to come.   Autonomy Definition Link

Growth Mindset

Image
Extrinsic Motivation vs. Intrinsic Motivation link I really enjoyed learning about growth mindset. I do not remember directly learning about it, but it is certainly possible that I have learned about it at some point in the past. The ideas of growth mindset are along the same lines of what I have spent a lot of my time researching. I am a psych major and I am in a lab where we got to research anything of our own choosing. I decided to spend the entire semester researching motivation, in hopes to make myself and others more motivated. A lot of what growth mindset was about was within the readings of my research. Intrinsic motivation is way better than extrinsic motivation. Grades and praise are extrinsic motivators that cannot sustain motivation for very long. A desire for knowledge and growth are examples of intrinsic motivators, which are great for keeping people motivated. Growth mindset uses these and few other things from my motivation research, so I was thoroug...

Introduction of an I/O Psych major

Howdy, My name is Charley Lewis. I am an easy going guy that is just about always happy. My favorite thing to do is hang out with my friends. We usually play super smash bros or cards against humanity, whenever we get together. I played smash bros. all throughout the summer and I ended up being top fifty in the state when left back for school. I also have a group that I play D&D with and I always have a great time doing that. I enjoy playing video games and watching anime. I guess I am just your general all around nerd. I am a psych major and am a super senior at this point. I started out as a chemical engineer, but I decided along the way that that really was not the right path for me. I love people. I am very much extroverted and am happiest when I'm around others. I decided that engineering would not be a good fit due to this, for I would be forced to work a lot by myself and wouldn't get the human interaction that I need. I took a psych class in high school an...
